What is Spider Solitaire?
Spider Solitaire is a solitaire card game played with two full decks, for a total of 104 cards. The game uses ten tableau columns, a stock pile and eight completed sequences that are removed from play as you build them.
Unlike classic Klondike Solitaire, Spider Solitaire is mainly about creating long descending sequences inside the tableau. A complete sequence runs from King down to Ace in the same suit, and once that sequence is finished, it is moved away automatically.
The game is called Spider Solitaire because there are eight completed sequences to build, often compared with the eight legs of a spider.
How to play Spider Solitaire
The aim of Spider Solitaire is to clear all 104 cards from the tableau by building complete same-suit sequences from King to Ace.
- Look for face-up cards that can be placed on a card one rank higher.
- Build descending sequences, such as Queen, Jack, 10 and 9.
- Try to keep cards in the same suit whenever possible.
- Move same-suit sequences together when they are correctly ordered.
- Reveal face-down cards by moving the cards above them.
- Use empty columns to reorganize difficult stacks.
- Deal 10 new cards from the stock pile when you have no useful moves left.
- Complete eight King-to-Ace sequences to win the game.
You can move a single card onto any card that is one rank higher. For example, a 7 can be placed on an 8. In harder versions, you can build mixed-suit stacks, but only same-suit sequences can usually be moved together as a group.
Spider Solitaire setup

Spider Solitaire is set up with 10 tableau columns and a stock pile. At the beginning of the game, 54 cards are dealt into the tableau and 50 cards remain in the stock.
The first four tableau columns receive six cards each. The remaining six columns receive five cards each. Only the top card of each column is face up at the start, while the cards underneath are face down.
The stock pile deals one new card to each tableau column at a time. Since there are 50 cards in the stock, you can deal new cards five times during the game.

Spider Solitaire rules
Spider Solitaire has simple rules, but every move matters. The better you manage your columns, the easier it becomes to uncover hidden cards and finish full sequences.
- You can place a card on another card that is exactly one rank higher.
- You can build descending sequences in the tableau.
- Same-suit sequences are the most valuable because they can be moved together.
- A complete same-suit sequence from King to Ace is removed from the tableau.
- When you deal from the stock, one new card is added to each of the 10 columns.
- You should not deal from the stock until you have used the strongest available moves.
- Empty columns can be used to move cards around and create new options.
- The game is won when all eight complete sequences have been cleared.
1 Suit, 2 Suits and 4 Suits Spider Solitaire
Spider Solitaire can be played at different difficulty levels. The rules are similar, but the number of suits changes how much planning you need.
1 Suit Spider Solitaire
1 Suit Spider Solitaire is the easiest version and the best place to start if you are learning the game. Since all cards belong to the same suit, sequences are simpler to build and move.
This version is ideal for beginners, quick games and players who want a relaxed Spider Solitaire experience.
2 Suits Spider Solitaire
2 Suits Spider Solitaire is a medium-difficulty version. You can still build descending sequences, but you need to pay much closer attention to suits if you want to move groups of cards efficiently.
This version is a good choice once you understand the basic rules and want a more strategic card game.
4 Suits Spider Solitaire
4 Suits Spider Solitaire is the hardest version. It uses all four suits, which makes it much easier to block important cards and much harder to build complete same-suit sequences.
Choose 4 Suits when you want the most challenging Spider Solitaire game.
Spider Solitaire strategy tips
Winning Spider Solitaire is not just about making the first move you see. The best players plan ahead, protect flexible columns and avoid dealing new cards too early.
Reveal face-down cards first
Hidden cards limit your choices. Whenever possible, make moves that uncover face-down cards and open new options in the tableau.
Build by suit when you can
Mixed-suit stacks can help in the short term, but same-suit sequences are much stronger because they can be moved together. Try to organize cards by suit before the tableau becomes crowded.
Create empty columns
An empty column is one of the most useful tools in Spider Solitaire. Use empty columns to move long sequences, uncover hidden cards and rebuild difficult stacks.
Be careful before using the stock pile
Dealing from the stock adds 10 new cards to the tableau. That can help when you are stuck, but it can also bury good sequences and make the board harder to solve.
Move Kings with care
Kings can only be moved into empty columns, so placing a King too early can reduce your flexibility. Move Kings when they help you build a longer sequence or free an important hidden card.
Use undo to learn
Undo is useful when you want to compare different moves. If one move blocks the game, go back and try another path.
